Adult Piano Students at Shelley Kurtz's Studio

It's never too late to take piano lessons. Shelley Kurtz teaches many adult students. A few were beginners; some resumed piano lessons after many years. Playing the piano is a fulfilling pastime, and it's excellent exercise for the brain. In a our world of instant gratification, it's nice to master a skill and feel the inner smile of accomplishment!

Here is a five-star Yelp review of Shelley Kurtz Piano Lessons:

Excellent teacher. Makes you feel good as you make progress no matter how fast or slow. I am an adult beginner and slow, but my husband played when he was young and is moving ahead quickly. Both of us love our time with Shelley.

Yes, adults can and do learn to play! They practice faithfully, as a rule, perhaps because they often pay for their own lessons. An adult grasps the theoretical side of music quickly and soon understands what the music requires of him. I often say to adult pupils: "All you need is ten fingers, intelligence, and a large amount of perseverance."---Julia Broughton in Success in Piano Teaching

Here are a few good rules for adult pupil;

1. Think definitely. Learn to concentrate.

2. The teacher should make it plain that good style is important and a wrong note is not the worst fault. Do not worry over a wrong note. Be undisturbed.

3. Count while you play. Sometimes sing the counting. This keeps your mind busy and you cease to worry.

4. Controlled relaxation is the basis of piano playing. If you are not too concerned about your progress, you will soon gain confidence. Relax mentally and then you will relax physically.

5. Remember that you learn to play chiefly by your own efforts at the practice period, not just by taking

lessons. ~~~Julia Broughton in Success in Piano Teaching

The Adult Beginner

It scarcely seems necessary to define the word adult. Yet for the piano teacher, an adult can be any one of several people: the 18-year-old high school graduate or college student who likes music and wants to take some piano lessons; the young woman whose children are now in school and who wishes to resume lessons after a hiatus of many years; the individual in a field other than music who wishes to embark on some sort of artistic study, has decided that the piano is the instrument he or she has always wanted to learn to play and is now ready to begin; a person whose children are grown, who is looking for new interests to develop, and who thinks learning to play the piano would be rewarding; the retired individual who now has the time to pursue his or her musical interests and wants to learn to play the piano.

For the person who teaches adults, there are some psychological aspects to keep in mind. The adult who chooses to study piano is usually strongly motivated and often has many attitudes and ideas about the piano. He or she frequently possesses a background of musical experiences, though not necessarily all good and not necessarily related to the piano. These musical experiences influence his or her attitude towards studying music and the reasons for choosing the piano to learn to play.~~~from Teaching Piano
